According to a spokesperson for the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, a shooter attacked two young students, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The authorities suspect that the gunman then took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter specifically chose the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a branch of Protestant Christianity. Both of the students involved, who are male, are in severe condition and are currently receiving medical care for their critical injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea announced these details during a press briefing held on Wednesday evening.
Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento, in response to reports of an active shooter made to 911. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, confirmed the incident.
Initial reports indicated that the shooter visited the school campus to speak with the principal about enrolling a family member as a student. This meeting had been planned in advance and was described as friendly by Sheriff Honea. However, investigators are looking into whether the shooter used this meeting as a guise to gain access to the school grounds.
Right after the meeting was over, the principal heard gunshots and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting happened.
Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered the gunman, who was identified as an adult male, had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was incapacitated. A handgun was located in close proximity to the gunman’s body. Authorities are currently investigating the source of the firearm used by the gunman.
