According to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, a shooter targeted two young children, ages 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The shooter then passed away from what authorities suspect was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter attacked the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist church. Both victims, who are male students, are in very critical condition with severe injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a trauma center in the Sacramento region, according to Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.
Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento, in response to multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter situation. Megan McMann, a representative from the sheriff’s office, provided this information.
Early reports indicated that the shooter arrived on campus to have a meeting with the principal about potentially enrolling a family member as a student. Sheriff Honea mentioned that the meeting had been planned beforehand and appeared to be friendly. However, investigators were still looking into whether the meeting was a trick by the shooter to gain access to the school grounds.
Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screaming, according to Sheriff Honea. It was believed that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred, but outside.
Upon the arrival of law enforcement, they discovered that the shooter, a man who was an adult, had taken his own life with a gunshot wound. A gun was found close to where the shooter was lying. The authorities are currently investigating how the shooter came to possess the gun.
