On Wednesday afternoon, a person with a gun shot two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The authorities believe the shooter then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter specifically chose to attack the school due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a branch of Protestant Christianity. Both victims, who are male students, are currently in a very critical state with severe injuries and are receiving treatment at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. This information was shared by Butte County Sheriff, Kory L. Honea, during a press conference held on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement was called to Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, following reports of an active shooter situation. The school is located approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, confirmed the incident.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter arrived at the school to speak with the principal about potentially enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been planned beforehand and was described as friendly. However, authorities are investigating whether the meeting was a pretext used by the shooter to gain access to the school grounds.

Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screaming, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not inside the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered the male shooter had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was deceased. A handgun was located in close proximity to the shooter’s body. Investigation is ongoing to determine how the shooter acquired the firearm.
