A shooter attacked two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California on Wednesday afternoon. The perpetrator then died from what officials suspect was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a representative from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
Law enforcement suspects that the shooter chose to attack the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist faith. Two male students are currently in critical condition with severe injuries and are receiving medical treatment at a trauma center in Sacramento. Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea provided this update during a press conference held on Wednesday evening.
Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist school in Oroville, California, in response to reports of an active shooter. Megan McMann, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, confirmed that the school is located approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento.
Initial reports indicated that the shooter had come to the campus to speak with the principal about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting was arranged beforehand and was described as friendly. However, authorities are still investigating whether the meeting was a tactic used by the shooter to gain access to the school grounds.
Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screaming, as reported by Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.
Upon arrival, the officials discovered that the shooter, a man who was of legal age, was found deceased with a gunshot wound that seemed to be self-inflicted. A handgun was located in close proximity to the shooter’s body. The authorities are currently investigating the source of the gun used by the shooter.
