A shooter fired at two young students, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California on Wednesday afternoon. The authorities believe the shooter then took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement suspects that the shooter chose to attack the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist faith. The two injured students, both males, are in a very critical state and are receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea provided this information during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, following reports of an active shooter from 911 calls. Megan McMann, a representative for the sheriff’s office, confirmed the incident happened about 60 miles north of Sacramento.

Initial information indicated that the shooter arrived on campus to talk to the principal about enrolling a family member as a student in a meeting that had been arranged beforehand, according to Sheriff Honea. The meeting was described as friendly, but investigators are still determining if the shooter used it as a ploy to gain access to the school grounds.

Not long after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. It is thought that the students were not inside the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that the shooter, a man who was of legal age, was found deceased with a gunshot wound that seemed to be self-inflicted, as stated by the sheriff. A handgun was located in close proximity to the shooter’s body. The investigation is ongoing to determine how the shooter obtained the firearm.
