A shooter fired at two children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California on Wednesday afternoon. The authorities suspect that the shooter then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter chose the school as a target due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist faith. Two male students are currently in critical condition with severe injuries, receiving treatment at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. Sheriff Kory L. Honea of Butte County provided this information during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials went to Feather River Adventist school in Oroville, California, following reports of an active shooter made through 911 calls. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, provided this information.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter entered the campus to speak with the principal about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been arranged beforehand and was described as friendly. However, authorities are investigating whether the meeting was a trick by the shooter to gain access to the school grounds.

The principal heard gunshots and screams shortly after the meeting ended, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting happened.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that the shooter, a man who was of legal age, had sustained a gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted. A handgun was also located in close proximity to the shooter’s body. Authorities are currently investigating how the shooter came into possession of the firearm.
