On Wednesday afternoon, a person with a gun shot two young children, ages 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The gunman then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter chose to attack the school due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist faith. The two victims, both males, are currently in a dire state and receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in Sacramento, according to Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., the police went to Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, which is about 60 miles north of Sacramento. This was in response to multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter incident. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, provided this information.

Initial information indicated that the shooter went to the campus with the intention of meeting the principal to talk about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been planned beforehand and was described as friendly. However, investigators are still determining if the shooter used this meeting as a ploy to gain access to the school grounds.

Shortly after the meeting was finished, the principal heard gunshots and screaming, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought the students were not in the classroom at the time of the shooting.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that the shooter, a man, had been shot and was no longer a threat. A gun was located near his body, and officials are currently investigating how he came into possession of the weapon.
