According to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, a shooter targeted two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. After the incident, the shooter is believed to have taken their own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter chose to attack the school due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist church. Two male students are currently in critical condition with severe injuries at a trauma center in Sacramento, according to Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea during a press briefing on Wednesday night.
Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials went to Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento, in response to 911 calls reporting an active shooter. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, confirmed the incident.
Initial information indicated that the gunman went to the campus to talk to the principal about enrolling a family member as a student, in a meeting that was planned in advance, according to Sheriff Honea. The meeting was friendly, but investigators are still unsure if the gunman had ulterior motives for being on school property.
Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not inside the classroom at the time of the shooting.
Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that the male gunman had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was deceased. A handgun was discovered near his body. The authorities are currently investigating how the gunman acquired the weapon.
