An individual opened fire at a small religious school in rural California, injuring two students aged 5 and 6 before taking their own life with a gunshot, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials think that the shooter chose to attack the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist church. The two students, who are both male, are in very critical condition with severe injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. These updates were provided by Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento, in response to reports of an active shooter received through 911 calls. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, provided this information.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter arrived at the campus with the intention of meeting the principal to talk about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been scheduled beforehand and appeared to be friendly. However, investigators are looking into whether the shooter may have used the meeting as a way to gain access to the school grounds under false pretenses.

The principal heard gunshots and screams right after the meeting finished, according to Sheriff Honea. It was thought that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that the shooter, a man of legal age, was incapacitated due to a gunshot wound that seemed to be self-inflicted. A firearm was located close to the shooter’s body. The authorities are currently investigating how the shooter came into possession of the gun.
