On Wednesday afternoon, a person with a gun shot two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The individual then died from what officials think was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials believe that the shooter chose to attack the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a Protestant Christian group. Both of the victims, who are male students, are currently in a very serious condition and are receiving treatment for their severe injuries at a trauma center in Sacramento. The Butte County Sheriff, Kory L. Honea, provided this information during a press conference held on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, which is approximately 60 miles from Sacramento. They were responding to reports of an active shooter that had been called in to 911. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, provided this information.

Initial reports indicated that the gunman visited the campus to speak with the principal about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting was planned in advance and deemed to be friendly. However, authorities are investigating whether the gunman used this meeting as a pretext to gain access to the school grounds.

The principal heard gunshots and screams after the meeting was over, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, the authorities discovered that the gunman, identified as an adult male, was found deceased with a gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted. A handgun was also located near the gunman’s body. The investigation is ongoing to determine how the gunman acquired the firearm.
