A shooter attacked two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California on Wednesday afternoon. The authorities suspect that the shooter then took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This information was confirmed by a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter specifically chose to attack the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a branch of Protestant Christianity. The two students, both males, are currently in a critical state and receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. This information was disclosed by Kory L. Honea, the sheriff of Butte County, during a press conference held on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials were called to Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento, after reports of an active shooter were made to 911. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, confirmed the response.

Initial findings indicated that the shooter entered the campus with the intention of meeting with the principal to talk about enrolling a relative as a student. The meeting had been planned in advance and was described as pleasant. However, authorities are investigating whether the meeting was a deception by the shooter to gain access to the school.

Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunfire and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. It is believed that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that the shooter, a man who was of legal age, had sustained a gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted. A handgun was discovered close to the shooter’s body. Authorities are currently investigating how the shooter came into possession of the firearm.
