A shooter targeted two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The authorities believe the shooter then took his own life with a gunshot. This incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter selected the school as a target due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a branch of Protestant Christianity. Both victims, identified as male students, are in a severe condition and are currently receiving treatment for their critical injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea provided this information during a press conference on Wednesday evening.

At approximately 1:10 p.m., the police were called to Feather River Adventist school in Oroville, California, which is located about 60 miles north of Sacramento. Megan McMann, a representative from the sheriff’s office, stated that the authorities received reports of an active shooter situation.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter arrived at the campus for a meeting with the principal to talk about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been planned in advance and was described as friendly. However, authorities were investigating whether the meeting was a trick by the shooter to gain access to the school grounds.

Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and people screaming, according to Sheriff Honea. It was suspected that the students were not inside the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, the authorities discovered that the gunman, identified as an adult male, was incapacitated with what seemed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the sheriff. A handgun was located in close proximity to the gunman. The authorities are currently investigating the source of the gun used by the gunman.
