On Wednesday afternoon, a shooter targeted two young students aged 5 and 6 at a small religious school in rural California. After the incident, the authorities reported that the gunman died from a gunshot wound that they suspect was self-inflicted, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter selected the school specifically due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a Protestant Christian group. The two individuals injured in the shooting, both male students, are currently in very critical condition and are receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea shared this information during a press briefing held on Wednesday evening.
Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento, in response to reports of an active shooter made via 911 calls. Megan McMann, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, confirmed this information.
Initial reports indicated that the gunman came to the campus to meet with the principal about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting was planned in advance and appeared to be friendly. However, investigators are looking into whether the gunman may have used the meeting as a deceptive tactic to gain access to the school grounds.
Not long after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not inside the classroom when the shooting happened.
Upon arrival, the authorities discovered that the male gunman had shot himself and was no longer a threat. A handgun was located near his body. The authorities are investigating how the gunman acquired the weapon.
