On Wednesday afternoon, a shooter attacked two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The gunman then died from what officials believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials think that the shooter specifically chose to attack the school due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist religion. Both of the victims, who are male students, are in very critical condition and are receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in Sacramento. This information was shared by Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea during a press conference on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist school in Oroville, California, following reports of an active shooter from 911 calls. Megan McMann, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, confirmed the incident occurred about 60 miles north of Sacramento.

Early information indicated that the shooter had planned to meet with the principal at the school to talk about potentially enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been scheduled beforehand and was described as friendly. However, authorities were investigating whether the shooter had used the meeting as a way to gain access to the school for other reasons.

After the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, officials discovered the male shooter had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was deceased. A handgun was found nearby. The investigation is ongoing to determine how the shooter acquired the weapon.
