A shooter targeted two young students, 5 and 6 years old, at a small religious school in rural California. The authorities suspect the shooter took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the incident. This information was confirmed by a representative from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter selected the school as a target due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a Protestant Christian group. The two students, both male, are in critical condition and are receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region, as stated by Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.
Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, following 911 calls reporting an active shooter. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, provided this information. Feather River Adventist School is located approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento.
Initial information indicated that the gunman entered the campus with the intention of meeting the principal to talk about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been planned beforehand and was described as friendly. However, investigators are looking into whether the gunman used this meeting as a trick to gain access to the school grounds.
Just after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. It was thought that the students were not in the classroom at the time of the shooting.
Upon the arrival of law enforcement, they discovered that the shooter, a grown man, was found dead from what seemed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was also found near the shooter’s body. The authorities are currently investigating how the shooter obtained the firearm.
