A person with a gun shot two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California on Wednesday afternoon. The shooter then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter chose to attack the school due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a Protestant Christian group. Two male students are currently in a severe condition with life-threatening injuries and are receiving treatment at a trauma center in Sacramento. Butte County Sheriff, Kory L. Honea, provided this information during a press conference held on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., officials were called to Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, following reports of an active shooter. The school is located approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento. Megan McMann, a representative from the sheriff’s office, confirmed the response to the incident.

Early reports indicated that the shooter had entered the campus to have a scheduled meeting with the principal regarding potentially enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting was described as friendly, but investigators are looking into whether the meeting was a ploy for the shooter to gain access to the school grounds.

Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screams, as stated by Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not inside the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that the shooter, a man of adult age, was deceased due to what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was located in close proximity to the shooter’s body. Authorities are currently investigating how the shooter came into possession of the firearm.
