On Wednesday afternoon, a shooter targeted two young children, ages 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The authorities believe the shooter then took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This information was confirmed by a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter specifically chose to attack the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a branch of Protestant Christianity. The two young victims, both male students, are currently in a grave condition and are receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea provided this information during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.
Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, following reports of an active shooter from 911 calls. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, provided this information. Feather River Adventist School is located approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento.
Initial reports indicated that the shooter arrived at the campus with the intention of meeting the principal to talk about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been planned beforehand and was described as friendly. However, investigators are still looking into whether the gunman used the meeting as a trick to gain access to the school grounds.
The principal heard gunshots and screams shortly after the meeting finished, according to Sheriff Honea. It is thought that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.
Upon arrival, the authorities discovered the male gunman had inflicted a gunshot wound upon himself and was incapacitated. A handgun was located nearby the gunman’s body. The officials are currently investigating how the gunman came into possession of the firearm.
