Kelly Loeffler, a former senator from Georgia and a major contributor to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s 2024 campaign, was selected by Trump to lead the Small Business Administration.

In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump mentioned that Kelly will use her background in business and Washington to help small businesses grow and succeed by cutting down on bureaucracy. She will also work on making sure that the Small Business Administration is held accountable to taxpayers by tackling issues like waste, fraud, and excessive regulations.

Ms. Loeffler lacks significant experience in government roles. She was chosen by Gov. Brian Kemp to take over a Senate seat in Georgia in early 2020, but was later defeated by the Rev. Raphael Warnock in a special election in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting former President Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler experienced a notable change in her political views. Initially considered a moderate Republican focused on business, her appointment to the Senate was seen as a way to broaden the appeal of the Georgia Republican Party.

Ms. Loeffler changed her political stance drastically while in office, aligning herself closely with Mr. Trump in order to secure her position in the 2020 election. However, Mr. Warnock ended up winning by a small margin in the runoff election.

If approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing an agency that provides loans and disaster relief to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration (S.B.A.) played a crucial role in distributing funds during the Covid-19 pandemic to support businesses in staying operational and ensuring their employees were paid.
