Kelly Loeffler, a former senator from Georgia and a major donor to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s 2024 campaign, has been selected by Trump to lead the Small Business Administration.

In a recent post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump expressed confidence in Kelly’s ability to use her background in business and government to cut down on unnecessary bureaucracy and create more opportunities for small businesses to flourish. He highlighted her commitment to holding the Small Business Administration accountable to taxpayers by eliminating waste, fraud, and excessive regulations.

Ms. Loeffler was relatively new to public service, having been chosen by Gov. Brian Kemp to fill a Senate seat in Georgia in early 2020. However, she was later defeated by Rev. Raphael Warnock in a special election in January 2021. During her final days in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting Mr. Trump’s attempt to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler’s political views evolved significantly. Initially perceived as a moderate Republican focused on business, her appointment to the Senate was seen as an attempt to broaden the appeal of the Georgia Republican Party.

However, Ms. Loeffler drastically changed her political stance while in office, aligning herself closely with and consistently approving of Mr. Trump as she sought re-election in 2020. Despite this, Mr. Warnock won the runoff election by a margin of two percentage points.

Should she be approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler will be in charge of overseeing the distribution of loans and disaster aid to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration was crucial during the Covid-19 pandemic, providing financial support to businesses to keep them afloat and ensure employees were still paid.
