President-elect Donald J. Trump announced on Wednesday his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, as the new head of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This decision implies that Trump plans to remove the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by Biden.
Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has promoted a tax credit created during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraud, resulting in the government losing billions more than anticipated. In response, lawmakers have attempted to eliminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has halted processing claims temporarily to identify and reject fraudulent applications for the tax benefit.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he and his colleagues have successfully helped businesses take advantage of the Employee Retention Tax Credit without facing any rejections from the tax agency. This program, established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020, was designed to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic downturn caused by the pandemic.
He stated that they do not allow anyone to cheat the system, but rather ensure that individuals meet the qualifications to receive a refund from the IRS, which includes interest on their own money.
Donald Trump’s selection, revealed on his social media platform, will cause a stir within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) during a crucial period. The Biden administration has allocated significant funds towards updating the agency and enhancing its tax collection activities to enhance customer satisfaction and combat tax evasion.
In 2022, President Biden selected Daniel Werfel, a former consultant and government official with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, to head the restructuring of the I.R.S. Werfel’s term was planned to continue until 2027.
