On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to head the Internal Revenue Service. This decision implies that he plans to dismiss the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by President Biden.
Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has been promoting a tax credit introduced during the pandemic, which has been plagued by fraudulent activities and ended up costing the government more money than originally anticipated. In response, lawmakers have attempted to terminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted the processing of claims to identify and eliminate false applications for the tax relief.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about his efforts in assisting businesses with claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that neither he nor his team had experienced any rejections from the tax agency for claims made. The Employee Retention Tax Credit was established in 2020 by Congress and former President Trump as a way to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees amidst the economic downturn caused by the pandemic.
He assured that they do not sneak anyone through, and they take measures to ensure that individuals qualify for the IRS refund with interest.
President Trump made a new selection for a key position in the IRS, which was announced on his social media platform. This decision is significant as it comes at a crucial time for the agency. The Biden administration has invested a large amount of money into updating the IRS and strengthening its tax collection activities to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.
President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to head the restructuring of the IRS. Werfel, a former management consultant and civil servant with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, was appointed to serve until 2027.
