Former Missouri Congressman Billy Long has been chosen by Trump to lead the IRS. Long, who served in Congress for six terms, has been assisting businesses in claiming a tax credit during the pandemic. This tax credit has faced issues with fraud and has ended up costing the government more money than originally expected.

On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to appoint Billy Long, a former Missouri congressman, as the new head of the Internal Revenue Service. This move indicates his plan to replace the current IRS leader, who was appointed by Biden.

Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long promoted a tax credit designed for the pandemic era. However, this tax credit has faced significant issues with fraud, resulting in much higher costs for the government than initially anticipated. Lawmakers have made efforts to eliminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. took steps to stop processing claims temporarily in order to identify and reject falsified applications for the tax break.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about his efforts to assist businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that he, along with his team, have not had any of their claims denied by the tax agency. This credit was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020, as a part of a larger stimulus package aimed at encouraging businesses to continue paying their employees amidst the economic downturn.

He stated that they do not sneak anyone through and ensure that they qualify for the refund from the IRS with interest.

Donald Trump announced his selection for a new leader of the IRS on his social media platform, potentially causing significant changes within the organization. The Biden administration has invested heavily in updating the agency and strengthening its tax collection operations to enhance customer satisfaction and combat tax evasion.

President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to head the restructuring of the I.R.S. Werfel, a former consultant and government employee who had experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, was appointed to serve until 2027.
