Donald J. Trump, who has been elected as President, announced on Wednesday that he plans to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to be in charge of the Internal Revenue Service. This means he will be replacing the current leader, who was appointed by President Biden.

Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has promoted a tax credit created during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraud and ended up costing the government much more money than originally anticipated. Lawmakers have attempted to end the tax credit, and the I.R.S. halted the processing of claims temporarily in order to identify and eliminate fraudulent applications for the tax benefit.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about his efforts in assisting businesses to apply for the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that he and his team have not had any claims denied by the tax agency. The Employee Retention Tax Credit was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 as part of a large stimulus package to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic downturn.

"We do not allow anyone to cheat or deceive their way through the process," he explained. "We ensure that they meet all the necessary requirements to receive a refund from the IRS, along with any interest owed to them."

President Trump’s selection, revealed on his social media platform, will bring significant changes to the I.R.S. during a crucial time. The Biden administration has invested a large amount of money in updating the agency and enhancing its tax collection activities to enhance customer satisfaction and combat tax evasion.

In 2022, President Biden selected Daniel Werfel to head the reform of the I.R.S. Werfel, who had experience as a management consultant and civil servant in both Democratic and Republican administrations, was appointed to serve until 2027.
