On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to serve as the head of the Internal Revenue Service. This move implies that Trump plans to dismiss the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by President Biden.
After losing in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long promoted a tax credit meant for the pandemic period that has suffered from a lot of fraud and ended up costing the government much more than anticipated. Legislators have attempted to end the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted the processing of claims to identify and eliminate fraudulent applications for the tax break.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about his efforts in assisting businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that neither he nor his team had faced any rejections from the tax agency regarding these claims. This tax credit program was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 as a part of a large stimulus package aimed at encouraging businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic downturn.
He emphasized that they do not sneak anyone through the process, but rather ensure that individuals truly qualify for the refund from the IRS, along with any interest owed.
Donald Trump announced his selection for a new leader of the IRS on his social media platform, which could bring significant changes to the organization at a crucial time. The Biden administration has invested a significant amount of money into updating the agency and strengthening its enforcement of tax laws in order to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.
President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to head the restructuring of the I.R.S. Werfel is a former management consultant and civil servant who has experience working in both Democratic and Republican administrations. His term in this position is scheduled to continue until 2027.
