Donald J. Trump, who won the election to become the next President, announced on Wednesday that he plans to choose Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to be in charge of the Internal Revenue Service. This means that he intends to dismiss the current head of the IRS, who was appointed by Biden.
Following a failed Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has been promoting a pandemic-related tax credit that has been plagued by fraudulent activity and resulted in the government spending billions more than anticipated. Efforts have been made by lawmakers to end the tax credit, with the IRS temporarily halting the processing of claims in order to identify and eliminate fake applications for the tax benefit.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about his efforts in assisting businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that he and his colleagues have not faced any denials from the tax agency for the claims they have submitted. The program, established in 2020 by Congress and Mr. Trump, aims to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during economic downturns.
He explained that they do not sneak anyone through the process of qualifying for the refund from the I.R.S. Instead, they make sure that individuals genuinely qualify to receive their own money back with interest.
Donald Trump has selected a new leader for the IRS, which comes at a crucial time. The Biden administration has invested a significant amount of money into updating the agency and strengthening its tax collection activities to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.
President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to head the I.R.S. overhaul. Werfel, a former management consultant and civil servant with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, was appointed to lead the agency until 2027.
