Former Missouri congressman Billy Long has been chosen by Trump to lead the IRS. Long, who served six terms in the House of Representatives, has been involved in assisting businesses in claiming a tax credit during the pandemic. This tax credit has faced issues with fraud and has ended up costing the government more money than originally expected.

President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former Missouri congressman, to be in charge of the Internal Revenue Service. This move implies that he plans to replace the current IRS leader, who was appointed by Biden.

Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has been promoting a tax credit that was intended to help during the pandemic but has instead faced issues with fraud, resulting in the government losing billions more than anticipated. Legislators have attempted to end the tax credit and the IRS has halted processing claims temporarily to investigate and prevent false applications for the tax break.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he assists businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that he and his team have not had any of their claims denied by the tax agency. This program, established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020, was designed to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic shutdown.

He assured that they don’t secretly help anyone qualify for the refund, but rather ensure that they are eligible to receive their own money back from the IRS with interest.

President Trump’s selection, which he revealed on his social media platform, will bring significant changes to the I.R.S. during a critical time. The Biden administration has allocated large sums of money to update the agency and strengthen its tax collection initiatives in order to enhance customer satisfaction and combat tax evasion.

President Biden appointed Daniel Werfel, a former consultant and government worker with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, to be in charge of revamping the I.R.S. Werfel’s term was expected to continue until 2027.
