On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to be in charge of the Internal Revenue Service. This move indicates Trump’s plan to remove the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by President Biden.

Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long promoted a tax credit created during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraudulent activity and ended up costing the government billions more than initially projected. Efforts have been made by lawmakers to eliminate the tax credit, and the IRS temporarily halted the processing of claims to identify and eliminate false applications for the tax break.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he assists businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that he and his team have not had any claims denied by the tax agency. This credit was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic shutdown.

He explained that they do not sneak anyone through, but instead ensure that they truly qualify for the refund from the IRS with interest.

Donald Trump has made a selection that will bring significant change to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) during a crucial time. The Biden administration has invested a large amount of money in updating the agency and strengthening its efforts to collect taxes, with the goal of enhancing customer service and combating tax evasion.

President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to head the I.R.S overhaul. Werfel, a former management consultant and civil servant with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, was appointed to serve in this role until 2027.
