President-elect Donald J. Trump selected Kelly Loeffler, who has been a significant contributor to his 2024 campaign and previously served as a senator in Georgia, to lead the Small Business Administration.

In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump stated that Kelly will use her background in business and Washington to decrease bureaucratic obstacles and create more opportunities for small businesses to succeed. He mentioned that she will prioritize accountability to taxpayers by targeting inefficiency, deception, and excessive regulations within the Small Business Administration.

Ms. Loeffler is relatively new to working in government. She was chosen by Gov. Brian Kemp to take over a Senate seat in Georgia in early 2020. However, she lost in a special election to Rev. Raphael Warnock in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting Mr. Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler went through a notable change in her political views. Initially considered a moderate Republican focused on business, her appointment to the Senate was seen as a way to broaden the appeal of the Georgia Republican Party.

However, Ms. Loeffler drastically changed her stance while in office, aligning herself closely with Mr. Trump in an attempt to secure her seat in the 2020 election. Ultimately, Mr. Warnock won the runoff election by a margin of two percentage points.

If approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing a government agency that provides loans and disaster aid to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration played a crucial role during the Covid-19 crisis, distributing large sums of money to help businesses survive and keep their employees on payroll.
