Kelly Loeffler, a former Georgia senator and major donor to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s 2024 campaign, has been selected by Trump to lead the Small Business Administration.

Mr. Trump stated that Kelly will use her expertise in business and Washington to help small businesses succeed by cutting down on bureaucratic obstacles and creating more opportunities for growth and innovation. He also mentioned that she will prioritize accountability at the Small Business Administration by eliminating wasteful spending, fraud, and excessive regulations.

Ms. Loeffler lacks a lot of experience in serving the public. She was chosen by Gov. Brian Kemp to take over a Senate seat in Georgia in early 2020, but lost to the Rev. Raphael Warnock in a special election in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was heavily involved in supporting former President Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler experienced a notable shift in her political views. Initially considered a moderate, business-focused Republican when she was selected for the Senate, her appointment was seen as a way to broaden the appeal of the Georgia Republican Party.

However, Ms. Loeffler drastically shifted her political stance to align closely with Mr. Trump, positioning herself as a strong advocate for him as she campaigned for re-election in 2020. Despite her efforts, Mr. Warnock emerged victorious in the runoff election by a margin of two percentage points.

If approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing a government agency that provides loans and disaster relief to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration was instrumental in supporting businesses during the Covid-19 outbreak by distributing billions of dollars to help them remain operational and support their workers.
