Kelly Loeffler, a former Georgia senator and a major donor to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s 2024 campaign, has been selected by Trump to lead the Small Business Administration.

Mr. Trump stated on Truth Social that Kelly will use her background in business and Washington to decrease bureaucratic obstacles and create more opportunities for small businesses to expand, be creative, and succeed. He mentioned that she will prioritize accountability to taxpayers by tackling issues like inefficiency, dishonesty, and excessive regulations within the Small Business Administration.

Ms. Loeffler lacks significant experience in government roles. She was selected by Gov. Brian Kemp to take over a Senate seat in Georgia in early 2020, but lost in a special election to Rev. Raphael Warnock in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting former President Trump’s campaign to challenge the results of the 2020 election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler’s political views underwent a notable change. Initially considered a moderate Republican focused on business, her appointment to the Senate was seen as a way to attract a wider audience to the Georgia Republican Party.

However, Ms. Loeffler shifted her political stance significantly while in office, presenting herself as a strong advocate for and unquestioning follower of Mr. Trump as she geared up to campaign for re-election in 2020. Ultimately, Mr. Warnock emerged victorious by a margin of two percentage points in a subsequent election.

Should she be approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing the distribution of loans and disaster aid to small businesses nationwide through the Small Business Administration (S.B.A.). The S.B.A. played a crucial role in providing financial support during the Covid-19 pandemic, giving out billions of dollars to help businesses remain operational and retain their employees.
