President-elect Donald J. Trump appointed Kelly Loeffler, who has contributed significantly to his 2024 campaign and previously served as a senator in Georgia, to lead the Small Business Administration.

Mr. Trump stated on Truth Social that Kelly will use her background in business and Washington to minimize bureaucracy and create more opportunities for Small Businesses to succeed. He mentioned that she will prioritize making sure the Small Business Administration is responsible to taxpayers by fighting against wasteful spending, fraud, and excessive regulations.

Ms. Loeffler does not have much background in working in government. She was chosen by Gov. Brian Kemp to take over a Senate seat in Georgia in early 2020. However, she lost in a special election to Rev. Raphael Warnock in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting former President Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler experienced a notable change in her political views. Originally considered a moderate Republican with a focus on business, her appointment to the Senate was seen as an attempt to broaden the appeal of the Georgia Republican Party.

However, Ms. Loeffler drastically changed her stance while in office, positioning herself as a strong advocate for and loyal follower of Mr. Trump as she geared up to campaign for re-election in 2020. Ultimately, Mr. Warnock emerged victorious by a margin of two percentage points in a subsequent election.

If approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing a government agency that provides loans and disaster assistance to small businesses nationwide. The SBA was crucial during the Covid-19 pandemic, distributing large sums of money to help businesses survive and keep their employees on payroll.
