Kelly Loeffler, a former Georgia senator and major contributor to Donald J. Trump’s 2024 campaign, was selected by President-elect Trump to lead the Small Business Administration.

Kelly’s background in both business and Washington will be used to cut down on unnecessary regulations and create more opportunities for small businesses to expand and succeed. President Trump expressed this in a post on Truth Social, emphasizing Kelly’s goal of holding the Small Business Administration accountable to taxpayers by eliminating waste, fraud, and excessive regulations.

Ms. Loeffler was relatively new to public service, having been chosen by Gov. Brian Kemp to fill a Senate seat in Georgia in early 2020. However, she was later defeated by Rev. Raphael Warnock in a special election in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, she was actively involved in former President Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler went through a major change in her political views. Initially considered a moderate Republican focused on business, she was selected for the Senate in order to attract a larger audience to the Georgia Republican Party.

However, Ms. Loeffler shifted her political stance to align closely with Mr. Trump in order to secure her seat in the 2020 election. Despite this, Mr. Warnock ended up winning the runoff election by a margin of two percentage points.

If approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing an agency that provides loans and disaster aid to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration was crucial during the Covid-19 crisis, distributing a significant amount of money to support businesses in staying operational and retaining their employees.
