President-elect Donald J. Trump has selected Kelly Loeffler, a prominent supporter of his 2024 campaign and a previous senator from Georgia, to lead the Small Business Administration.
In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump expressed that Kelly will use her business and Washington experience to help small businesses succeed by reducing bureaucracy and creating opportunities for growth and innovation. He also mentioned that she will prioritize accountability by cracking down on waste, fraud, and excessive regulations within the Small Business Administration.
Ms. Loeffler was relatively new to public service when she was appointed to the Senate seat in Georgia by Gov. Brian Kemp in early 2020. Her time in the Senate came to an end when she lost in a special election to Rev. Raphael Warnock in January 2021. Towards the end of her Senate term, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting former President Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election.
During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler experienced a notable shift in her political views. Originally perceived as a moderate Republican with a focus on business, her appointment to the Senate was seen as a way to attract a broader audience to the Georgia Republican Party.
However, Ms. Loeffler significantly changed her political stance during her time in office, positioning herself as a strong advocate and unquestioning follower of Mr. Trump as she geared up for the 2020 election to retain her seat. Ultimately, Mr. Warnock emerged victorious with a two percentage point lead in the runoff election.
If the Senate approves her, Ms. Loeffler will be in charge of an agency that provides loans and disaster assistance to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration was crucial during the Covid-19 pandemic, distributing billions of dollars to support businesses and their employees.
