Former Missouri Congressman Billy Long has been chosen by Trump to lead the Internal Revenue Service. Long, who served six terms in Congress, has been involved in assisting businesses in claiming a tax credit during the pandemic. This tax credit has faced issues with fraud and has ended up costing the government more money than originally expected.

President-elect Donald J. Trump announced on Wednesday his intention to appoint Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, as the new head of the Internal Revenue Service. This decision indicates his plan to remove the current IRS leader, who was appointed by President Biden.

Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has been promoting a tax credit designed for the pandemic era. This tax credit has been plagued by fraudulent claims, causing the government to incur billions more in costs than originally anticipated. In response, lawmakers have attempted to end the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted the processing of claims to identify and eliminate false applications.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about his efforts in assisting businesses to apply for the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that neither he nor his team had experienced any rejections from the tax agency regarding these claims. The program was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 as a way to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic downturn.

"We do not facilitate any unauthorized access," he explained. "We carefully verify that individuals are eligible to receive a refund of their own money from the IRS, along with any accrued interest."

Donald Trump made a new selection for a position within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) through his social media platform. This decision comes at a crucial time for the IRS, as the Biden administration has invested a significant amount of money to update the agency and enhance its ability to collect taxes. The goal of these efforts is to provide better service to taxpayers and to combat tax evasion.

President Biden selected Daniel Werfel, a previous management consultant and government worker who had experience in both Democratic and Republican governments, to head the revamp of the I.R.S in 2022. Werfel’s term was expected to continue until 2027.
