On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to head the Internal Revenue Service. This move indicates Trump’s plan to remove the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by President Biden.
Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has promoted a tax credit introduced during the pandemic which has been plagued by fraud and has ended up costing the government billions more than originally anticipated. In an effort to combat this issue, lawmakers have attempted to eliminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted the processing of claims to identify and reject fraudulent applications for the tax break.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long discussed his efforts in assisting businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that neither he nor his colleagues had faced any rejections from the tax agency for claims made. This program was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 as a way to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees amidst the economic downturn caused by the pandemic.
"We don’t secretly help anyone get through the process," he explained. "We ensure that they meet the requirements to receive a refund from the IRS, along with any accrued interest."
Donald Trump’s selection, revealed on his social media platform, will bring major changes to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at a critical time. The Biden administration has invested significant amounts of money into updating the agency and strengthening its tax collection initiatives to enhance customer satisfaction and combat tax evasion.
President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to head the restructuring of the IRS. Werfel, a former management consultant and government official with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, was appointed to serve until 2027.
