President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to appoint former Missouri congressman Billy Long as the head of the Internal Revenue Service. This decision indicates his plan to replace the current IRS leader, who was appointed by President Biden.

Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long promoted a tax credit introduced during the pandemic, which has been plagued by fraudulent claims and has ended up costing the government significantly more than anticipated. In response, lawmakers have attempted to terminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted the processing of claims to identify and eliminate false applications for the tax break.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he and his team assist businesses in accessing the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that so far, they have not had any of their claims denied by the tax agency. The credit was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 as a way to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic downturn.

He stated that they do not help people cheat the system, but instead ensure that they are eligible to receive a refund from the IRS, including any interest owed.

President Trump made a significant decision to appoint a new leader for the IRS through his social media platform. This change comes at a crucial time as the Biden administration has invested heavily in updating the agency and enhancing its tax collection capabilities. The goal is to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.

President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to spearhead the reformation of the I.R.S. Werfel, a former management consultant and civil servant with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, was appointed to lead the agency until 2027.
