On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his decision to nominate Billy Long, who previously served as a congressman in Missouri, to head the Internal Revenue Service. This move indicates Trump’s intention to dismiss the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by President Biden.

After losing a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long promoted a pandemic-related tax credit that has been plagued with fraud and ended up costing the government billions more than anticipated. Lawmakers have attempted to end the tax credit, and the I.R.S. temporarily halted processing claims to identify and eliminate false applications for the tax break.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about his efforts to assist businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that neither he nor his colleagues had encountered any rejections from the tax agency for these claims. The Employee Retention Tax Credit was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 as a way to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic downturn.

"We do not try to cheat or deceive anyone by getting them a refund they do not deserve. We ensure that they meet all the qualifications to receive their own money back from the I.R.S., along with any interest owed."

Donald Trump has made a new selection for a position within the Internal Revenue Service, which would bring about significant change at a crucial time. The Biden administration has invested a large amount of money into updating the agency and strengthening its efforts to collect taxes in order to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.

President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to head the I.R.S. reform, a person with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations as a management consultant and civil servant. Werfel’s term was expected to continue until 2027.
