Former Missouri congressman Billy Long has been chosen by Trump to lead the IRS. During his time in office, Long worked for six terms representing his state. After leaving Congress, he assisted companies in taking advantage of a tax credit created during the pandemic, which has unfortunately been associated with fraudulent claims and has ended up costing the government significantly more than originally expected.

Updating from the capital
On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to appoint Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to be in charge of the Internal Revenue Service. This suggests that he plans to remove the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by President Biden.
Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long promoted a tax credit created during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraudulent activity, resulting in the government losing billions more than anticipated. Legislators have attempted to end the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted the processing of claims in order to identify and eliminate false applications for the tax break.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he and his team have successfully assisted businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit without any denials from the tax agency. This credit was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic shutdown.
"We do not secretly help anyone receive this refund," he explained. "We ensure that they meet the qualifications to receive their own money back from the IRS, along with interest."
President Trump made a new selection for a key position in the IRS, which was announced on his social media platform. This decision will have a significant impact on the agency during a crucial period. The Biden administration has invested a large amount of money into updating the agency and strengthening its efforts to collect taxes, aiming to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.
In 2022, President Biden selected Daniel Werfel, a previous management consultant and government official with experience in Democratic and Republican administrations, to head the restructuring of the I.R.S. Werfel’s term was scheduled to continue until 2027.
