Discussion about Politics
During her last week in the Senate, Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat from California, spoke out about how Biden failed to keep a promise, as reported by a Harris ally.
Written by Lisa Lerer
Laphonza Butler has been a senator representing California for a short period of time, approximately 15 months. However, she has been a strong supporter and friend of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.
This week, I interviewed Butler, who has been working closely with Harris for a long time since they first met when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. Butler’s unique insight sheds light on the reasons behind her party’s loss in the presidential election and offers suggestions on how they can move forward and rebuild.
Harris has not publicly discussed the reasons for her loss. Butler believes that some of the blame lies with President Biden, who she thinks went back on a clear campaign promise by running for re-election. However, just blaming Biden is not sufficient according to Butler. She believes that Democrats need to stop talking and start genuinely listening to others.
Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Butler to take over the U.S. Senate seat that became vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. Since Feinstein chose not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in office. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will officially become California’s newest senator.
The interview was shortened and made easier to understand by editing it.
LL asked for the reason behind Harris’ loss.
LB: The American citizens were looking for something different. They were seeking a candidate who they believed embodied change. And that could be the main reason for their choice.
Was it a mistake for Biden to run for
President Biden originally stated that he would be a transitional leader, which was the expectation of many people. It may have been better for him to stick to that plan. Despite the success of his presidency, it will be remembered as one of the most impactful in history. However, when you set expectations with people, it is important to follow through on them.
