An interview with Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat from California, was conducted during her last week in the Senate. During the interview, a supporter of Vice President Harris claimed that President Biden had not kept his promise.

Written by Lisa Lerer

Laphonza Butler has only been a senator in California for approximately 15 months, but she has been a strong supporter and associate of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.

This week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has been in a lengthy partnership with Harris since they first met when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. This partnership gives Butler a unique viewpoint on why their party lost the presidential election and what steps they can take to rebuild.

Harris has not publicly discussed the reasons for her loss. According to Butler, part of the blame lies with President Biden, who she thinks went back on his promise by running for re-election. However, simply pointing fingers at Biden is not sufficient. Democrats need to shift from talking to actively listening and understanding the concerns of others.

Governor Gavin Newsom selected Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position that became vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. Since Feinstein chose not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in the Senate. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will officially become the state’s latest senator after taking the oath of office.

The interview was shortened and made clearer for easier understanding.

LL is asking for the reasons behind Harris’s loss.

The American people desired a shift in leadership and were looking for a candidate who they believed embodied change. This could be the reason behind their choice.

Is it possible that Biden should not have decided

When President Biden first took office, he mentioned that he would be a transitional leader, which was what people were expecting. It might have been better for him to stick to that plan. Although his presidency has been successful, it will be remembered as one of the most impactful in my lifetime. It is important to follow through on the expectations set for leadership.
