Discussion on Political Matters
A supporter of Kamala Harris claims that Joe Biden did not keep a promise, as stated by Senator Laphonza Butler, a member of the Democratic Party from California, in an interview conducted in her last week serving in the Senate
Written by Lisa Lerer
Laphonza Butler has been a senator representing California for a short period of time, approximately 15 months. However, she has been a strong supporter and friend of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.
During the week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has had a long working relationship with Harris. They first crossed paths when Butler was serving as a union leader in Los Angeles. This partnership offers her a unique viewpoint on why their political party lost the presidential election and what steps could be taken to reconstruct and strengthen it.
Harris has not publicly discussed the reasons for her loss. According to Butler, part of the blame lies with President Biden for going back on his promise by running for re-election. However, simply blaming Biden is not sufficient. Democrats need to stop talking and start actively listening to others.
Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Butler to take over the U.S. Senate seat that became vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. As Feinstein chose not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in office. Representative Adam Schiff will be inaugurated as the new senator for the state of California on Monday.

LL: What reasons do you believe contributed to Harris’s loss?
LB believes that the American people desired a different direction in leadership and sought a candidate who they believed embodied change. This could be the reason for the candidate’s popularity.
Was it a bad decision for Biden to run
At first, President Biden stated that he would be a temporary leader. This was what people were expecting. Therefore, it might have been better for him to stick to that plan. Despite the undeniable success of his presidency, it will be remembered as one of the most influential in my lifetime. However, setting expectations with people means that it is important to follow through on them.
