Regarding Politics
A close associate of Kamala Harris claims that Joe Biden did not keep a promise. Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat representing California, gave an interview during her last week in the Senate.
Written by Lisa Lerer
Although Laphonza Butler has only been a senator from California for a short time, she has been a strong supporter and friend of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.
This week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has been working closely with Harris for a long time. They first connected when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. This partnership provides Butler with a unique insight into why their party lost the presidential election and what steps can be taken to recover and rebuild.
Harris has not discussed in detail the reasons for her loss. Butler believes that President Biden is partially to blame because he went back on his promise not to run for re-election. However, Butler emphasizes that simply blaming Biden is not sufficient, and that Democrats need to listen attentively and take action.
Governor Gavin Newsom selected Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position that became vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. As Feinstein chose not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in the Senate. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will officially become the newest senator representing the state.
The interview was shortened and made easier to understand through editing.
LL: What is your opinion on the reasons for Harris’ loss
LB: The American citizens desired a shift in leadership. They sought a candidate who they believed embodied the idea of change. That could be the reason behind it.
Is it possible that Biden should not have entered
At first, President Biden indicated that he would be a temporary leader. This was the assumption that people had. Therefore, it might have been wise for him to stick to that plan. Despite this, we cannot ignore the achievements of his presidency. Looking back, his time in office will be seen as highly influential during my lifetime. However, when you set certain expectations with people, it is important to follow through with them.
