Political discussion with Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat from California, as she nears the end of her time in the Senate. A supporter of Harris claims that Biden has failed to keep a commitment.
Written by Lisa Lerer
Laphonza Butler has only been a senator in California for around 15 months. However, she has been a strong supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.
I recently had a conversation with Butler, who has a strong history of working closely with Harris. They first crossed paths when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. This partnership provides Butler with a unique viewpoint on why their party lost the presidential election and the steps they can take to regroup and rebuild.
Harris has not spoken much about the reasons for her loss in public. According to Butler, part of the blame lies with President Biden, who she thinks went back on his promise to not run for re-election. However, simply blaming Biden is not sufficient. Democrats need to stop talking and truly listen to others.
Governor Gavin Newsom chose Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position that Senator Dianne Feinstein had held until her passing in September 2023. As Feinstein had opted not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in the Senate. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will be officially sworn in as California’s newest senator.
The interview was shortened and made easier to understand by editing it.
LL asked for the reason behind Harris’ loss.
Many Americans desired a shift in leadership and sought a candidate who they believed embodied that change. It seems that this desire for change was a significant factor in their decision-making.
Is it a question whether Biden should have decided
When President Biden first took office, he indicated that he would only serve as a transitional leader. This was the expectation many people had, and perhaps he should have stuck to that plan. Despite the success of his presidency, it will likely be remembered as one of the most influential in my lifetime. However, once expectations are set, it is important to follow through on them.
