Politics Update: Biden accused of breaking promise by Harris ally

Interview with Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat from California, as she nears the end of her term in the Senate.

Authored by Lisa Lerer

Laphonza Butler has only been a senator in California for approximately 15 months, but she has been a trusted supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.

During the week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has been in a long-standing partnership with Harris since they first met when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. This partnership provides her with a unique viewpoint on why her political party lost the presidential election and what steps it can take to recover and rebuild.

Harris has not spoken much about the reasons for her loss. According to Butler, the blame partly lies with President Biden, who she thinks went back on his promise by running for re-election. However, simply blaming Biden is not sufficient. Democrats need to stop talking and truly listen to others.

Gov. Gavin Newsom chose Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position that was vacated after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. As Feinstein opted out of running for re-election, this week marks her final days in the Senate. Representative Adam Schiff will take her place as California’s newest senator after being sworn in on Monday.

LL asked for the reason behind Harris’s loss.

It seems that the American people were looking for a candidate who they believed could bring about change, and that is likely why they chose to support that candidate.

Is it possible that Biden should not have entered

When President Biden first took office, he mentioned that he saw himself as a transitional figure. This was the expectation many people had for his presidency. It may have been better for him to stick to that plan. Despite this, we cannot ignore the achievements of his administration. Looking back, his time in office will be seen as significant in my lifetime. However, when you set certain expectations with the public, it is important to follow through on them.
