Discussion on Politics

A supporter of Kamala Harris claims that Joe Biden failed to keep a promise. An interview with Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat from California, conducted in her last week serving in the Senate.

Written by Lisa Lerer

Laphonza Butler has been a senator representing California for a short period of about 15 months. However, she has been a strong supporter and friend of Vice President Kamala Harris for a much longer period of 15 years.

This week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has been in a long partnership with Harris. They first met when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. Their partnership gives her a unique viewpoint on why her party lost the presidential election and how it can work towards rebuilding.

Harris has not shared many details about why she lost the election. According to Butler, part of the blame lies with President Biden, who she thinks went back on his promise by running for re-election. However, simply pointing fingers at Biden is not the solution. Democrats need to shift from talking to actively listening and understanding the concerns of the people.

Governor Gavin Newsom selected Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position that was vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. Since Feinstein chose not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in the Senate. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will officially become the newest senator representing the state.

The interview was shortened and made clearer for easier understanding.

LL is asking for your opinion on why you believe Harris lost.

The people in America desired a different direction and were looking for a candidate they believed could bring about change. It seems that this desire for change was a significant factor in their decision-making.

Was it a mistake for Biden to run for

At first, President Biden indicated that he would be a transitional leader, which was the expectation people had. It may have been better for him to stick to that plan. Despite the success of his presidency, it will be remembered as one of the most impactful in my lifetime. However, once expectations are set, it is important to follow through on them.
