A supporter of Kamala Harris accuses Joe Biden of not keeping his word. An interview with Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat from California, as she nears the end of her time in the Senate.

Written by Lisa Lerer

Laphonza Butler has only been a senator from California for approximately 15 months. However, she has been a trusted supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.

This week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has been in a long partnership with Harris since they first met when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. This partnership gives her a unique perspective on why her party lost the presidential election and what steps they can take to rebuild.

Harris has not spoken much about the reasons for her loss publicly. Butler believes that part of the blame lies with President Biden for breaking a clear campaign promise by running for re-election. However, simply blaming Biden is not sufficient according to Butler. Democrats must move beyond talking and actually listen, truly listen.

Governor Gavin Newsom selected Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position that became vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. Since Feinstein chose not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in the Senate. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will officially become the newest senator representing the state.

The interview was condensed and made clearer for easier understanding.

LL: What is your opinion on the reasons for Harris’ loss

LB: The citizens of America desired a shift in leadership. They sought out a candidate who they believed could bring about change. That could be the main reason behind it.

Is it possible that Biden should not have decided

At first, President Biden mentioned he would be a transitional leader, which was the expectation people had. It may have been better for him to stick to that role. Despite the success of his presidency, it will be remembered as one of the most impactful in my lifetime. Once expectations are set, it’s important to uphold them.
