A supporter of Harris claims that Biden did not keep his word

An interview with Senator Laphonza Butler, who is a Democrat from California, in her last week serving in the Senate.

Written by Lisa Lerer

Even though Laphonza Butler has only been a senator in California for around 15 months, she has been a strong supporter and friend of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.

Earlier this week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has had a longstanding partnership with Harris since they first met when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. This partnership provides Butler with a unique viewpoint on the reasons behind her party’s loss in the presidential election and strategies for rebuilding.

Harris has not spoken much about the reasons for her loss publicly. Butler believes that part of the blame lies with President Biden, who she thinks went back on a clear campaign promise by running for re-election. However, Butler emphasizes that simply blaming Biden is not sufficient. According to her, Democrats need to stop talking and instead focus on truly listening to others.

Governor Gavin Newsom chose Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position that became vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. Feinstein opted not to seek re-election, so this week marks her final days in office. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will officially become the state’s newest senator.

The interview was shortened and revised for easier understanding.

LL is asking for the reasons behind Harris’ loss.

The American populace desired a shift and were looking for a candidate who they believed embodied that change. It seems that was the main reason for their choice.

Was it a mistake for Biden to run for

When President Biden first took office, he mentioned that he would be a transitional leader. This was the expectation people had, and it might have been better for him to stick with that plan. Despite the success of his presidency, it will be remembered as one of the most influential in my lifetime. However, when you set expectations, it’s important to uphold them.
