Discussing Political Matters

A close associate of Kamala Harris claims that Joe Biden did not fulfill a promise. Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat representing California, gave an interview in her last week in the Senate.

Authored by Lisa Lerer

Laphonza Butler has only been a senator from California for approximately 15 months, but she has been a strong supporter and friend of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.

This week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has been in a long partnership with Harris since they first met when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. Butler’s unique perspective sheds light on why her party lost the presidential election and offers insights on how it could potentially recover and rebuild.

Harris has not addressed her loss publicly. According to Butler, part of the blame lies with President Biden for breaking his promise not to run for re-election. However, Butler believes that simply blaming Biden is not the solution. Democrats need to focus on listening and understanding instead of just talking.

Governor Gavin Newsom selected Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position that became vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. Since Feinstein chose not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in office. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will officially become the state’s latest senator after being inaugurated.

The interview was modified to make it shorter and easier to understand.

LL is asking for the reason behind Harris’ loss.

LB believes that the American people desired a change and were looking for a candidate that they believed embodied that change. This could be the reason for their decision.

Was it a mistake for Biden to run for

When President Biden first took office, he indicated that he would be a transitional leader, which was the expectation of many people. It may have been more beneficial for him to continue in that role. Despite the success of his presidency, it will be remembered as one of the most significant in my lifetime. However, once expectations are set, it is important to follow through on them.
