Discussing politics, Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat from California, talked about Joe Biden breaking a promise in an interview during her last week in the Senate.
Written by Lisa Lerer
Laphonza Butler has been a senator from California for approximately 15 months, but she has been a strong supporter and friend of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.
During the week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has had a lengthy collaboration with Harris. They first crossed paths when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. This partnership offers Butler a unique viewpoint on why their political party lost the presidential election and potential strategies for rebuilding.
Harris has not spoken much about the reasons for her loss. According to Butler, some of the blame lies with President Biden for breaking a campaign promise by running for re-election. However, simply blaming Biden is not the solution. Democrats need to focus on listening and understanding, rather than just talking.
Governor Gavin Newsom selected Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position that became vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. Since Feinstein chose not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in the Senate. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will be officially inaugurated as the newest senator from the state.
The interview was changed to make it shorter and easier to understand.
LL: What is your opinion on why Harris was defeated?
LB: The desire for change was evident among the American people. They were looking for a candidate who they believed embodied change. This could be the main reason for the outcome.
Was it a mistake for Biden to run for
When President Biden first took office, he indicated that he would be a transitional leader. Many people expected this of him. It might have been better if he had stayed in that role. Despite this, his presidency has been successful. In the future, his time in office will be remembered as one of the most significant in my lifetime. However, when you set certain expectations, it is important to uphold them.
