In the realm of politics, a supporter of Harris speaks out against Biden for allegedly not keeping his word. Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat from California, gives an interview during her last week in the Senate.

Written by Lisa Lerer.

Laphonza Butler has only been a senator from California for around 15 months, but she has been a trusted partner of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.

During my conversation this week, I had the opportunity to talk with Butler. Butler has had a longstanding partnership with Harris, which began when they first crossed paths while Butler was working as a union leader in Los Angeles. This unique partnership provides Butler with valuable insights into the reasons behind her party’s loss in the presidential election and potential strategies for rebuilding.

Harris has not publicly discussed the reasons for her loss. According to Butler, some of the blame lies with President Biden, who she feels betrayed a clear campaign promise by running for re-election. However, solely holding Biden accountable is not sufficient, as Democrats need to shift from talking to actively listening and understanding.

Governor Gavin Newsom selected Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position that became vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. Feinstein chose not to seek re-election, so this week marks her final days in office. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will officially become California’s newest senator.

The interview was shortened and made clearer for easier understanding.

LL: What is your opinion on the reasons behind Harris’ loss

LB: The general public in America desired a shift in leadership. They were looking for a candidate they believed embodied change. That could be the primary reason for the outcome.

Was it a mistake for Biden to have run

President Biden originally stated that he would be a transitional leader, which was the expectation people had. It might have been better for him to stick to that plan. Despite this, his presidency has been successful and will likely be seen as one of the most impactful in my lifetime. However, when you create an expectation with people, it is important to follow through on it.
